My Thoughts:

Kimberly Derting has been one of my favorite authors for a very long time. I’m a huge fan of The Body Finder series and even though The Pledge wasn't that great for me, I was super excited when I found out she was releasing a new series! The Taking was literally the first book that I read this year! I was so excited about my ARC that I couldn't wait to dive right in.

The Taking is about a sixteen year old girl named Kyra who, after a softball game, suddenly disappears without a trace. She wakes up behind the dumpster of her local gas station 5 years later but it feels like the next morning to her. She’s still wearing her softball uniform and hasn't aged a day. Soon, a mysterious stranger starts showing up everywhere she goes and Kyra soon discovers that there is a lot more behind her disappearance than she originally thought.

Even though Kyra is a good main character I didn't feel all that emotionally attached to her. Everything that happens, her disappearance and reappearance, all happens so fast in the very beginning that you don’t really get a chance to become attached to the life that she had before. Most of the story is her struggle with accepting that everyone has moved on without her. We, the readers, don’t get the chance to know the Kyra before, we only know the person that Kyra becomes after she resurfaces.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Kyra and Tyler who incidentally is her “before” boyfriend’s younger brother. Since five years has now passed, Tyler is one year older than Kyra. They become really close throughout the book, both trying to figure out what happened to her. Tyler is really super cute! He always admired his older brother's girlfriend and now here she is, she hasn't aged a day and he has the chance to actually get to know her! I really like that he kind of always held a candle for her!

The plotting and the pacing of the book were a little bit slow at times, especially in the middle but it really kicks up towards the end, making me hopeful that book two will be an action-packed adventure. There was also a bit of a cliffhanger at the end which made me really excited! I don’t generally like cliffhangers but this one made me really anticipate the rest of the series! Oh, and since I wasn't super obvious about it, it’s about aliens which we definitely don’t have enough of in YA right now.

The Taking was a really great book to start the year off with and now in just a couple of weeks everyone can enjoy it as well! Not only was it a great start to a really exciting new series, it can really appeal to those readers who are new to sci-fi!

My Thoughts:

Since I already own an ARC of Phoenix and just received an ARC of the final book in the trilogy Wings I thought that it’s probably high time that a write a review for Black City. I was a little hesitant going into this book because I had heard it was about vampires and we all know that the whole vampire thing is way overdone in YA lit!

Looking back, I’m glad I've waited so long to write this review. I've read a few vampire novels since Black City and they all fell flat for me and has made me realize how unique this vampire story really is. While checking out my Goodreads account, I noticed that I gave this book 3 start just after I finished reading it. After my year of retrospection of vampire novels, this book definitely deserves 4 stars.

Black City starts off really, really strong! It’s super action-packed right off the bat which reeled me immediately! But then towards the middle it starts to drag a bit and get a little boring. And then at the end it gets really good again! I feel like I’m describing a trilogy all in one book!!

Even though it has a little insta-love, I still really loved the relationship between the two main characters. As far as world building, I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the vampires and/or darklings and how they’re depicted as a separate species. It’s all very interesting and something I want to read more about. Black City is one of the better vampire novels out there in YA literature!

Review: Vicious by V.E. Schwab

My thoughts:

Before all the hype started to grow for Vicious I knew I wanted to read it. I read Schwab’s The Archived and immediately fell in love with her writing style, knowing that I would read pretty much anything else that she wrote. So when I heard about Vicious I was all aboard and got it from the library as soon as it became available to me.

Here’s a basic run down of the story. Eli and Victor are college roommates and best friends. Both are fairly smart and have bright futures ahead of them. Eli discovers that one can attain “extra ordinary powers” or become an EO through a near death experience. So Eli and Victor force themselves into near death experiences to become EOs. Without giving away any spoilers, 10 pass and the two are mortal enemies and Victor has made it his mission to take Eli out!

Almost every single character in this book is a terrible person. They almost have no redeeming qualities. Eli is out trying to fulfill what he believes to be his “God-given mission” and is just doing absolutely horrible things. Victor wants to do horrible things to Eli in the name of vengeance. Never a good reason. I think my favorite character is Sydney because she really struggles with right and wrong throughout the book. She has this innocence about her that, even though it doesn’t make Victor change his mind about anything, it really makes him take a good hard look at what he’s doing. And with everyone doing absolutely terrible things the whole time, it was refreshing to read from her perspective at times.

No spoilers, but the ending is definitely what made Vicious so good for me. It was very satisfying! If you’re a fan of Schwab’s other book I would definitely recommend reading Vicious!

Review: The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

My thoughts:

There has been a whole lot of hype surrounding this book and people have been giving it rave reviews almost across the board. People have said that it’s a unique take on the overdone vampire story and that they found it very refreshing. I’m definitely going to be in the minority when it comes to The Coldest Girl in Coldtown because I don’t think that it’s all that great! So for this review I’m going to make a list of the problems and why it’s not all that unique.

1. Clocking in at over 400 pages, The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is just way too long especially since not much happens for most of the book. The first 30 pages start off really strong with a super gruesome scene of an entire party that has just been slaughtered. So I thought, “Yes! This is going to be great!!” But no. It was very slow and at times I questioned whether or not I was going to finish it.

2. Tana, the main character, is very unlikable and just makes horrible decisions. “Hey, let me save this vampire who could possibly drain me dry once we are out of danger. That’s an awesome idea!” “Instead of just dropping my newly turned vampire ex-boyfriend off at the nearest coldtown I’m actually going to go in and hang out for a little bit! That also sounds awesome!” Everything that happened to her is her own damn fault. She is just a flat character and was exactly the same person at the end as she was at the beginning.

3. If I thought Tana was unlikable and annoying, her little sister was even worse! What a naive little brat. The only purpose she served was as a plot device for the ending of the story. That’s it!!

4. In my humble opinion this certainly did not seem like a “unique” vampire story. In The Coldest Girl in Coldtown there are vampires who have been around for a very long time who worked tirelessly to keep their existence a secret. When a person gets bit by a vampire they then turn into a full-fledged vampire after consuming human blood. The older the vampire is the stronger the vampire is. The vampires get burned to ash if they are in direct sunlight. How is this in any way unique? The only part that I thought was remotely interesting was the coldtowns. But unfortunately there is not a lot of information there.

So overall the book was a bit of a letdown. It’s way too hyped for what it is. If someone wants to read a unique take on vampires, go read the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. Now that’s what I call a good vampire story!

Review: The Indigo Spell

My thoughts: 

Richelle Mead is hands down, by far my favorite paranormal author! And I'm pretty sure this is how all my reviews of her books start. She is just one phenomenal writer and she continues to blow me away with her books! Do you guys realize that The Indigo Spell, The Fiery Heart and Gameboard of the Gods are all published this year?!? Man, Richelle Mead sure was working hard last year! 

The Indigo Spell was just another great installment in the Bloodlines series! I loved the sexual tension between Sydney and Adrian! It just continued to build and build until there were a few hot and steamy moments that made me want to cheer. I think it's so funny that she's always telling herself that she can never be with someone like Adrian because he's a Moroi but when it comes down to it she just can't control herself or her feelings! She has huge feelings for Adrian and I really hope they win out in the end. 

I'm also intrigued by all this magic that is being introduced to the series.  The Vampire Academy world is so vast and I'm continually surprised by all the new aspects that are coming out of the woodwork.  But this magical element is just so awesome and how Sydney is taking to it.  If she thinks that she doesn't really like the Moroi then she really doesn't like the magic and she continues to resist! But I have a feeling that the magic is also going to win out in the end. Oh, this series is just so amazing!!!

Needless to say, I cannot wait for the Fiery Heart!!! I will be there, at the bookstore, on release day, ready to dive into the next installment of the Bloodlines series!!

Review: Onxy

My thoughts:

I love this series! Love, love, love this series! I was somewhat of a late comer to the Luxen because I can honestly say that their original covers turned me away. After multiple bloggers told me to get on it I felt like I had no choice but to finally pick it up. And I am so glad that I did! When I was around middle school/early high school I really loved that show called Roswell! Ever since then UFO's, Roswell, NM and stories about aliens have always intrigued me.  So for me, the Lux series is definitely great because it has that Roswell feel!

What really makes the Lux series exciting to read is that there is always something going on! Some kind of adventure, mysterious plot development and very suspicious behavior by some sketchy characters! I'm always on the edge of my seat! No doubt Onyx had all this and more! Since Katy has developed some of Daemon's alien power, her life is crazier than ever and now a new guy at entered the picture vying for her attention.  I would say it's a love triangle but, honestly, Daemon has no competition! I knew this new guy was sketchy all along and that it was just a matter of time before Katy admitted that she's in love with Daemon.

I don't know what it is about Daemon but he is one of the hottest guys I've ever read! Every time he calls Katy "kitten" I just MELT!!! I love every word he says and that he's not afraid to admit that he's in love with Katy! Even though his temper is a little off-putting, he is still in my top 10 book boyfriends!

I'm telling you, if you have not read this series yet, you need to get on it! It's one of my favorites right now and has also made Jennifer L. Armentrout one of my favorite authors!

Review- Betrayal

My thoughts:

For as long as I can remember I've always loved a good murder mystery novel! And I'm pretty sure I always will. There's just something about a good mystery that keeps me reading a book. Now add a little bit of the paranormal element and I'm definitely hooked!  Even if I have it somewhat figured out, I'm going to read it to the end just to see if I'm right or wrong! 

When reading Envy, I couldn't get enough of the mystery that is surrounding twins Haley and Taylor. Even after Betrayal, their special abilities haven't been truly explained but it's still fun to get wrapped up in their world.  I love how we get to see so many aspects of the twins lives and see how most of the time they work in perfect sync but then how they also argue.  

I really enjoy how Olsen writes the mystery.  He gives away the clues that are only necessary and as the story evolves, more is revealed and the pieces fall into place.  It's probably the reason why I have never been able to figure out who is the murderer. Betrayal is such a great murder mystery because of the characters, the dark and gloomy setting and because of the touch of paranormal! I give Betrayal 4 hearts for being a mystery that I couldn't figure out!

My thoughts: 

I want to start this by saying that Richelle Mead writes the most amazing stories! I have yet to read one of her books that I don’t like! I've read all the Vampire Academy novels, the first and second in the Bloodlines series and I’m getting ready to start the second book in her Succubus series. I love them all! I just can’t get enough! You can bet that I will be buying the first book in her newest series, Gameboard of the Gods!

So pretty much in The Golden Lily, vampire hunters are after Sonia because they don’t believe that she is truly restored and Sydney is fighting her inner conscience about possibly using magic. That’s pretty much all that happens. Little side stories here and there, Adrian trying to be a better Adrian and of course the awesome ending and DIMITRI!

I love when I get to immerse myself with this world that I love so much. At first, Sydney was just an okay character for me when we first met her in the Vampire Academy series. But now I’m really starting to love her! She’s always looking out for other people while constantly reminding herself that she needs to keep everything professional because it’s her job. I also love her internal struggle and conversations with herself about magic. I knew it was just a matter of time before she gave in! The one thing that always annoys me is when she thinks she needs to be on a diet because being a size 2 isn't skinny enough. I HATE that! I wanted to give Adrian a big high five when he told her that she could stand to gain a few pounds! And speaking of Adrian and Sydney together!! We’re finally getting some sparks and passion! Dimitri is, of course, perfect and I just love how he always plays the protector role!

Needless to say, Bloodlines is one of my favorite series and The Golden Lily was just spectacular! I have to give The Golden Lily 5 hearts because I am on the edge of my seat waiting for The Indigo Spell!!

Review- The Immortal Rules

My thoughts: 

This is a very difficult review for me to write. So many people are big fans of Julie Kagawa, her Iron Fey series and of The Immortal Rules. I’ve read the first two books in the Iron Fey series and even though I thought they were pretty good and enjoyable, I felt like they were unnecessarily long. And I have the same feelings toward The Immortal Rules. I enjoyed it enough, but I felt it was unnecessarily long.

When I heard Julie Kagawa was writing a vampire series, I inwardly groaned because I have grown somewhat weary of vampire books. There are only so many ways you can write a vampire story and after a while they all start sounding the same. But somehow Kagawa was able to make it different. I really enjoyed the dystopian aspect of the book and the world building. Allison is human in the beginning and she talks of humans being taken over, books being outlawed and not a lot of use for the modern technology that we have now. What really made her vampire story different was the hierarchy of the vampire race and the mass population of rabid vampires. When a master vampire creates anther vampire, the bloodline become diluted. So when that new vampire tries to create a new vampire it becomes even more diluted and it doesn’t take as easily. Thus ending up with rabids who have no inclination of common sense or self control.

But there the story becomes the same is the vampire who is struggling to hold on to her humanity. This is a very common story line in vampire books which is understandable because the vampire was once human and they don’t want to be some kind of killing machine. They don’t want to become what they once hated.

Allison is an enjoyable main character. She’s a strong, kick ass, Asian girl who wields a samurai sword! That’s pretty awesome! She has a fierce survival instinct but can also be compassionate. She took a weaker kid under her wing; she protected him from the bullies and fed him when she was struggling to feed herself. I really felt for her most of the time. She’s had it rough. As for the romance, I think it's doomed from the start! She meets Zeke on the road to Eden where vampires are not allowed in, but they still managed to fall for each other. I don't see how this romance could possible continue in the future! But it definitley has me looking forward to see how it's going to play out!

Even though I enjoyed The Immortal Rules, I have a feeling it was all build up to the next one. It makes me really excited to thinks that the second book is going to be completely awesome! I give this book 3.5 hearts for an action-packed adventure and incredible world building!

Review- Obsidian

My thoughts: 

Obsidian is my first Jennifer L. Armentrout experience and it was quite the enjoyable ride. I became interested in reading this when one of my Twitter friend put out that she was looking for bloggers to be on her team for Daemon Invasion. Thinking Daemon Invasion had something to do with Vampire Diaries I was very interested and asked her what it was about. She then informed me it had to do with Obsidian and if I would like to be on her team even though I had not read the book. I said “why not” and promptly ordered the book and dug right in as soon as it came in the mail. And WOW!!! It was sssoooo good!!

First of all, I love that Katy is a book blogger! I think it really makes the book. She’s always talking about updating her blog, playing with the layout, doing her Waiting on Wednesday post and always keeping a look out for books coming in her mailbox! Totally the life of a book blogger! I really loved Dee as well! She was so sweet, caring and genuinely wanted to be friends with Katy even though Katy is human.

There really aren’t that many alien books out there in YA right now. Which makes the Lux series unique. It’s also super fun to read because as a reader we are learning about a new race of characters that have all sorts of different powers. It’s not like reading your average vampire or werewolf novel which is one of the reasons why I loved it so much!

Daemon and I have this intense love/hate relationship (I talk about him like I know him). Most of the time he’s this arrogant jerk who wants to make Katy think that he doesn’t care what happens to her; but then there are these quick moments where you can tell that he really does care and that he really does like her. Daemon just knows first-hand what can happen if he lets his guard down and falls for a human. Katy and Daemon’s sexual tension is so intense and it really makes for a good read.

I’m so interested to see where the story goes from here and what happens in Onyx! After Obsidian, I definitely need to check out her other books like the Covenant series and I’ve wanted to read her book Cursed for a really long time now! I give Obsidian 5 hearts because Daemon is the perfect tall, dark and handsome.

My thoughts: 

I have always been a firm believer in the fact that there is not enough mermaids in YA fiction. Mermaids have always been my favorite form of paranormal characters and sadly the YA mermaid books are few and far between. Ever since I saw The Little Mermaid in theaters with my grandma when I was four years old, I knew I was hooked (pun intended, haha)! I don't care if the mermaids lure men to their deaths with their beautiful songs or if their only joy in life is collecting forks and other human objects, we need more of it in YA!

I really enjoyed Lies Beneath. I came into it completely objective and I actually thought it was the story of a mermaid because of the cover and not a merman. I really liked the creativity that Brown had with the story. It's not your typical story of merpeople living in colonies under the sea. Calder lives with his sisters and they murder humans for their life force. It's very intoxicating for them which is why they are drawn to humans in the first place. They live on land (even though they move around) but they can't be out of the water for more than twenty-four hours at a time. Every winter they are drawn back to Lake Superior where they were born. But this particular winter, they go back to murder a man who unknowingly owes them a life debt.

What I loved most was the perspective of the guy. From the beginning we really don't know a lot about him, but throughout the story his life is revealed and how he came to be a merman. I definitely don't picture Calder as the person on the cover of the book but more of a surfer build, tan with shoulder length blond hair. Absolutely swoon worthy! Lies Beneath is also a story about romance. He's definitely falling in love with Lily when him and his sisters are trying to lure her dad to his death.

I loved the whole mystery surrounding the reason for the life debt. I always enjoy a good mystery especially if I can't guess the ending!  There's a lot of family history that they uncover and it had me anxiously reading until the last page! Lies Beneath is an excellent YA mer story that I will be continuing to read in the future. I give Lies Beneath 4 hearts because I finally have a book boyfriend that is a merman!

My take:

First of all, Demonglass was so much better than Hex Hall. If I remember correctly, I only gave it a three star review. I felt like Hex Hall served mainly as the set up for the series, an introduction to the character and to build the world for the readers. Demonglass started off with a punch, drawing the readers into the mystery and secrets that are surrounding Sophie’s life and very existence.

There is no such thing as the sophomore slump in this fun and light paranormal series. It’s summer break for Sophie after her first year at Hex Hall where she discovered her serious crush is also a serious threat to her life. Her father takes Sophie, her best friend/vampire Jenna and the gorgeous grounds keeper Cal off to England to spend her vacation in the family mansion. She thinks her father wants her there for some serious father/daughter bonding time but he actually uses her to get his hand on a very powerful book! I was completely surprised! But he also helps her control her crazy strong powers.

Everything we know about Hectate Hall is completely blown out of the water when we learn the truth about Mrs. Casnoff and her sister, who we meet in this book. There were so many plot twists and turns, I was on the edge of my seat!

Even after Demonglass, I’m still torn about Archer. I loved him in Hex Hall but in Demonglass it got a little iffy for me. I feel like he’s hiding so many secrets from Sophie but continually swears that he doesn’t want to hurt her. I believe he doesn’t want to but I don’t think he realizes that he is by not telling her the truth. I’m team Cal! I love him! Even though he’s the strong and silent type, he’s loyal to her and believes she can do whatever she puts her mind to. He supported her even before she met him! And without him, she would have died already. Literally. Because he has healing powers.

And just when I think I’m getting a handle on Sophie being a demon, there’s this crazy cliffhanger! I recommend this book to anyone who has read Hex Hall whether they liked it or not!

My take:

I love this series! Well, at least I hope it’s a series and not just a book one and book two. I really hope there’s more because Tamsin is one of my favorite witchy characters! Not only is it a witch story but there is also time travel, action and a love story. It’s so fun!

Tamsin and Gabriel are such a great couple. They work well together as a team and they have such great chemistry. It’s not like super hot with tons of sexy times, but they’re funny, cute and sweet to each other. They’re powers work well together and without Gabriel, Tamsin would have a lot harder time achieving her goal.

I also love the message that Always a Witch sends out to teenagers. Don’t be afraid to be who you were meant to be. Tamsin soon realizes that she is the one with great power in her family and she has the responsibility to make sure that the Greene family isn’t destroyed. And when she understands what she has to do, she doesn’t let anyone get in her way!

Once a Witch and Always a Witch are both great books! They’re fun, light and super breezy reads! They’re such fun witchy books!

My thoughts: 

I read Born Wicked way back in December and I have literally been mulling over writing this review for two weeks now. Not because I didn’t like it, but because I really loved it. When I first started reading YA, I would say without a doubt, hands down, no hesitation that books about vampires were my absolute favorite (I’m sure Twilight contributed to my vampire adoration). But of course the lack luster has worn off and I realized that many vampire stories are very cookie cutter.

Witches have really grown on me and they have become some of my favorite stories in YA right now. As a history major in undergrad, I was always fascinated by the Salem Witch Trials and I would have taken that class in an instant if it had been offered. But sadly it was not and it was just a subject I dabbled in on my free time.

I loved the history of this story and that it is set in the past. It is set in a little town where at any indication that someone may be a witch, their sent off to an institution or hanged! In this world that Spotswood created, the witches used to be in charge and they openly practiced their magic. But they were overthrown by the Brotherhood who now impose their religious beliefs on the townspeople and rule with a strict hand. And all the witches are female.

The subplots were reall great as well! We have the whole story with Cate and her decision of whether or not she is going to marry or join the sisterhood. I'm kept on the edge of my seat just hoping that her or her sisters are not going to get caught doing magic. And then there's the whole intermingling of the Brotherhood and the Sisterhood and their roles in the community and the impact they have on the sister's lives. Then when Cate finds her mom's diary, so much more is revealed and the story just comes together with what is really going on and what could possibly go down in the next books!

Cate is such a great character. She is strong, protective of her family and is determined to help raise her sisters as her mother would have wanted. Finn, one of her possible love interests, is so cute and awkward but he is willing to accept her for who she is. Maura was one of my least favorite characters only because she was so annoying. There were times when I wanted to just slap her! But then after finding out about the prophesy, it seems like things played out they way they were supposed to.

I really loved this book! There are very few books that keep me up into the wee hours of the early morning because I just have to finish it and this one definitely did that to me! I was crying, it left on a cliffhanger and I just have to know what happens next and this first book hasn’t even been released yet! A great debut from a fantastic writer!

Review- Everneath

My take: 

I am quite surprised that there have been so many modern re-tellings of the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone this year. So when I got this book for review, I was a little disappointed to discover that I would have to read yet another modern re-telling of Hades and Persephone. And with the way it started, I didn’t think I would be able to get through it. But then it turned out to be the most creative re-telling of Hades and Persephone that I have read this year! I definitely thought it was better than The Goddess Test and Abandoned.

The main concept behind this particular modern take on a Greek myth is these being called the Everlings. Every so often, they take unsuspecting females down into the Everneath and feed off their life source for their equivalent of 100 years (6 months normal time). They are ruled by their queen who seems to have been the only girl who has ever survived the feeding. Even though it is not really specified, I’m guessing that all the Everlings are male because if a female ever survived, she can threaten to take over the queen and her particular Everling would encourage her to do so.

So Nikki, who disappeared without a trace six months ago, has now survived the Feed and wants to go back to her family and her boyfriend but she will only have six more months before she has to leave the mortal world forever. Her soul was already claimed by the Everneath and it’s only a matter of time before they come looking for her. But she has no idea why she survived and all the other girls had not and her journey to figure it out is so good. At least the second half of the book is.

The other thing that made the book really good for me was the Daughter of Persephone. They are this cult of women who believe they are decedents of Persephone and they literally groom their daughters to be taken to the Everneath in the hopes that they will survive and overthrow the queen. I love mysterious subplots that are rooted in the past. I feel like I’ve already give away too many spoilers so I’m going to wrap this up.

Get through the first half of the book because the second half is really good and the ending, of course, leaves you with a crazy cliffhanger. It’s definitely not one of my favorite books, but it was enjoyable.

Review- Thin Air

Just when she’s mastered zippers and buttons, she catches herself dropping a sugar packet into her coffee and mistaking a photo of John Lennon for one of Daniel’s relatives.

Her eccentricities raise the occasional eyebrow with Daniel and his friends, but her quirky charm, sweetness, and sincerity win out. Before long, she lands a job, begins a relationship with Daniel, and starts settling into her new life—until her past comes after her.

My take: 

When I first received Thin Air in the mail, I was so surprised by how thick it is. I even kind of avoided because of the length. But then my review book started piling up and I made a decision to just get through them no matter what. And I literally read Thin Air in less than two days!

The first aspect of the book that really pulled me in was the sheer creativity of the characters. I have never read a book where the author turned the simple elements of the environment into actual creatures that make the wind blow or the rain fall. It caught my curiosity so immediately that I instantly wanted to know more about the elementals.

I really enjoyed the supernatural world that Seresin created. Just above the clouds, live a type of elementals called the air sylphids. Their main job is to make the clouds which is pretty cool. I wish my job was to just make clouds! So after living for years and years without mating with one of her own, she falls in love with a human and eventually decides that she needs to become human herself to truly be happy.

The only thing I didn’t like about this book was how fast she found Daniel. She was thrown in the middle of New York City, completely naked, without even a name and she manages to find Daniel within a matter of hours. It seems a little unlikely to me but I guess her story with Daniel was more important than her journey to find Daniel.

My most favorite parts of the book were when she was figuring out how to be a human and to do normal things that we do every day. They were really funny and it made me realize how often we take for granted normal things like eating or opening a can of coke.

Even though the ending was happy, there’s also this cliff hanger that makes me want to know what’s going to happen next or if she will ever be safe! And I must say this Daniel must be damn good-looking for so many women to be in love with him! I really enjoyed this book and it really is different, exciting and very creative! Definitely worth the read.

Review- Hallowed

My take: 

I cannot even begin to tell you guys how much I not only loved this book, but love this series. I reviewed Unearthly a few months ago and I just gushed. It’s a series that you can connect to on almost every level because it just grabs hold of you and won’t let you go. I read it last month and I’m still thinking about the characters.

In Hallowed, just like Unearthly, Clara is still struggling to fully understand her purpose and figure out what she is supposed to do with now knowing that Christian is also an angel-blood. She truly believes that she messed up her purpose by saving Tucker instead of saving Christian like she believed she was supposed to. And then there’s Tucker who is all-country, hot and completely in love with Clara. In Unearthly, I was completely and one-hundred percent team Tucker and totally against the idea of Clara and Christian. But after reading Hallowed, I’m torn. Tucker let me down a little bit and Christian redeemed himself. As much as I loved Angel’s character in Unearthly, she kind of made me a little upset in Hallowed with her jealousy.

Hallowed had me running through almost every emotion. I cried through almost the whole second half of the book! There are also so many OMG moments that confused me, made me happy and made me sad. I loved the part about Clara’s dad and that whole subplot was very well executed. There is also something very creepy going on with Jeffery and I have a very bad feeling that he might do something terrible in the next book!

Honestly guys, this is one of my favorite series right now and this second book will not disappoint you if you loved Unearthly. Might I say, it is even better than the first. Which is normally unheard of, but in this case, it’s true. If you haven’t read Unearthly yet, I hope this review will make you want to go out and buy the book! Because you need to!!

Mini Review- The Name of the Star

My take: 

Ever since high school, I have always thought that Jack the Ripper has been an interesting case.  A series of brutal murders occurring in the nineteenth century that no one was able to catch.  After all this time, people are still obsessed with researching and investigating to see if they can figure it out.  

When I first heard about this book I expected it to be somewhat of a horror book.  Even though it wasn't exactly what I had expected, I ended up really liking it.  Rory is awesome because she's this clueless American teenager when it comes to living with Brits in an English boarding school.  She's really southern which, I think, makes the whole situation funnier.  Rory really learns a lot about herself in this book and I hope in the second book she develops even further.  

I loved the suspense and the thrill of not knowing what was going to happen next or who was doing the killing.  It was a really fun story that I hope will continue to stay good until the end.

My thoughts: 

For some reason I was so opposed to reading this book. I saw it all over the blogosphere, people just raving about it after they read their advanced coping. I kept thinking to myself that I’m not going to read it or buy it and I’m just not going to do it! I always thought that the cover was gorgeous and the title was cool but I didn’t like the sound of the synopsis. It sounded like every other YA book out there right now. And then the worst happened!! I got it for my birthday. SO now the book is sitting there on my shelf, staring at me, just daring me to pick it up and start it. Of course I wouldn’t be writing this review if I didn’t give in.

I absolutely loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I love everything about it and I honestly can’t say one bad thing. It’s exactly what everyone says it is: beautiful, exotic, enticing, and completely surprising. It’s very well written, mature and Taylor’s characters are well-rounded and realized. I’ve honestly never read another book like it!

Karou is an amazing main character. A blue-haired force of nature who collects languages. How completely awesome! I wish I could collect languages without the hassle of actually having to learn them. A traveler who has seen more of the world than she cares to admit, she lives in Europe as an art student. Raised by a few chimeras, she grew up believing she was abandoned by her human parents and found by this half-man, half-beast creature. She grew up traveling through portals which have taken her all around the world so she could collect bones for Brimstone.

Akiva is by far my favorite character and I have a serious literary crush on him. He haphazardly runs into Karou while she is on one of her bone gathering missions and she takes him by surprise so completely that he just has to find out who she is. His pursuit of her leads to her discovery of who she is and where she came from. Everything that I love about Akiva is learned after this one huge moment in the book! But I can’t say anything about his amazing qualities without giving away spoilers and I don’t give away spoilers!

I love the while concept that Brimstone does his business dealings in the currency of wishes. These wishes are put into physical form depending on the size of the wish. Karou wears a necklace of tiny beads, which in reality is a tiny wish such as her hair growing blue or exacting her revenge on a few of her classmates. I also love the whole setting of the book. It’s at a European art school and I would have loved to see her best friend’s marionette art project. I really hope there is more Akiva in the next book! I’m so excited for it!!

I also had the opportunity of meeting Laini Taylor.  She is so awesome and so very creative! If I didn't work for Disney, I would have a hard time deciding of dying my hair blue or pink.  All of us at Mysterious Galaxy had a great time!

My thoughts: 

At first Warm Bodes really confused me. What I thought I knew from the synopsis was wrong and from its classification in the horror genre, I thought it was going to be scary. It's definitely a very gory book! The whole concept is that zombies cannot remember their lives from before they’re infected. Even though they don’t have any memories left, they live together in family like communities. They take care of the elderly and the children and the men go out hunting for fresh meat and bring it back. The story centers around R who has discovered he can see and experience memories of his victims if he eats their brain which is how he falls in love with one of his victims’ girlfriends.

I know a zombie love story sounds really weird but this story was done so well. It could have very easily been really bad. R keeps his victim’s brain, kidnaps his girlfriend and as he experiences more and more of his victim’s life, he get a burning need to become human again. But is love enough to bring back someone who is completely lost to the infection? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
The most fascinating aspect of this book was the zombie community. They are ruled by these zombie like elders called bones because they’re literally so old they are practically only bones. The foundation of this community is not really addressed but it would be fascinating to know more about it. There was also something mysterious going on with the Bone elders that I would love to know more about.

Of course, like most good books, it’s being made into a movie! The cast has already been chosen and it’s set to come out in the summer of next year! I think it’ll make an interesting movie!
