Top of My Pile (4)

Hey there and welcome to Top of My Pile! I decided to start this post because I often times feel the need to talk about the book that I'm currently reading and throw out some of the thoughts I have about before I finish it! I usually have all these crazy theories about how the story is going to end or what's going to happen to the main characters. But by the time I get around to writing my review, I forget what was swirling around in my head. So that's why I started this new Saturday post. It also gives me a chance to let you know what I read this week and also, what I'm planning on reading next.

Unfortunately, I have been seriously neglecting my blog but in all fairness I was on vacation for most of last week and the week before! I had an awesome time but now it's time to hunker down and get some reading and blogging done!

Please feel free to participate in this little meme if you would like! Just remember to link back to me!

Currently Reading:

The Diviners by Libba Bray

Why am I still reading these books! I've been such a slacker and I need to knock them out this weekend!

Waiting on Wednesday (73)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating. This is one of my favorite memes because not only is my TBR pile so much bigger at the end of the night but also the covers are always amazing!

Title: Broken
Author: A.E. Rought
Hitting the Shelves: January 08, 2013

Imagine a modern spin on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein where a young couple's undying love and the grief of a father pushed beyond sanity could spell the destruction of them all.

A string of suspicious deaths near a small Michigan town ends with a fall that claims the life of Emma Gentry's boyfriend, Daniel. Emma is broken, a hollow shell mechanically moving through her days. She and Daniel had been made for each other, complete only when they were together. Now she restlessly wanders the town in the late Fall gloom, haunting the cemetery and its white-marbled tombs, feeling Daniel everywhere, his spectre in the moonlight and the fog.

When she encounters newcomer Alex Franks, only son of a renowned widowed surgeon, she's intrigued despite herself. He's an enigma, melting into shadows, preferring to keep to himself. But he is as drawn to her as she is to him. He is strangely... familiar. From the way he knows how to open her locker when it sticks, to the nickname she shared only with Daniel, even his hazel eyes with brown flecks are just like Daniel's.

The closer they become, though, the more something inside her screams there's something very wrong with Alex Franks. And when Emma stumbles across a grotesque and terrifying menagerie of mangled but living animals within the walls of the Franks' estate, creatures she surely knows must have died from their injuries, she knows.

What are you waiting for?

Title: Iron Hearted Violet
Author: Kelly Barnhill
Hitting the Shelves: October 09, 2012

The end of their world begins with a story.
This one.

In most fairy tales, princesses are beautiful, dragons are terrifying, and stories are harmless. This isn't most fairy tales.

Princess Violet is plain, reckless, and quite possibly too clever for her own good. Particularly when it comes to telling stories. One day she and her best friend, Demetrius, stumble upon a hidden room and find a peculiar book. A forbidden book. It tells a story of an evil being -- called the Nybbas -- imprisoned in their world. The story cannot be true -- not really. But then the whispers start. Violet and Demetrius, along with an ancient, scarred dragon, may hold the key to the Nybbas's triumph . . . or its demise. It all depends on how they tell the story. After all, stories make their own rules.

Iron Hearted Violet is a story of a princess unlike any other. It is a story of the last dragon in existence, deathly afraid of its own reflection. Above all, it is a story about the power of stories, our belief in them, and how one enchanted tale changed the course of an entire kingdom.

What are you waiting for?

Guest Post! Research and Endings by Jessica Warman

Today I have the great pleasure of welcoming Jessica Warman to the blog today! Jessica has been kind enough to write a guest post about the research she did for her book Beautiful Lies!

When it comes to research… it’s never been a strength of mine. I don’t enjoy it, and as a result I try to do as little as possible. If I had to make a list of “things I avoid at whatever cost necessary,” research would probably be number three. (Number one would be death; number two would be olives.)

That being said, sometimes doing research is unavoidable; this was the case with Beautiful Lies. I spent a lot of time talking to the twins in my life (my husband’s sisters) and reading about twin phenomenon online. There are tons of interesting stories out there, so it was pretty painless.

As far as anything that didn’t make it into the final version of the book – that’s actually a very interesting question to me. As a matter of fact, there was a lot of back-and-forth about the ending. I’m the kind of writer (and reader) who doesn’t like neat, tidy endings. I like ones that are messy and ambiguous, much like real life. In the past few years, I’ve come to realize that I am in the minority with this opinion. And as much as I wanted to stay true to the original ending I had in mind, the fact is that I’m not writing these books for myself. I’m writing them for my readers; to refuse to alter my ideas simply because I preferred them seemed short-sighted and selfish.

In the end, I was very happy with the ending of the book. It’s still somewhat vague and confusing (as it’s supposed to be), but it’s not like I’m saying, “Ha, ha! You got all the way to the end, but nothing’s going to happen!” As I said, these stories aren’t written for me nearly as much as they are for you. If I ignored that fact, it would be like somebody giving me a sandwich with a bunch of black olives hidden underneath the lettuce, just because they happen to like them.

YES! Talk about a crazy ending! That ending had me reeling! If you haven't read my review on Beautiful Lies by Jessica Warman you can check that out here! I hope you guys enjoyed this guest post and that you pick up Beautiful Lies soon, if you haven't read it!

Title: Chantress
Author: Amy Butler Greenfield
Hitting the Shelves: May 07, 2013

Sing and the darkness will find you.

Shipwrecked on an island seven years ago, Lucy has been warned she must never sing, or disaster will strike. But on All Hallows Eve, Lucy hears tantalizing music in the air. When she sings it, she unlocks a terrible secret: She is a Chantress, a spell-singer, brought to the island not by shipwreck but by a desperate enchantment gone wrong.

Her song lands her back in England — and in mortal peril, for the kingdom lies in the cruel grasp of a powerful Lord Protector and his mind-reading hunters, the Shadowgrims. The Protector has killed all Chantresses, for they alone can destroy the Shadowgrims. Only Lucy has survived.

In terrible danger, Lucy takes shelter with Nat, a spy who turns her heart upside-down. Nat has been working with his fellow scholars of the Invisible College to overthrow the Lord Protector, and they have long hoped to find a living Chantress to help them. But Lucy is completely untrained, and Nat deeply distrusts her magic. If Lucy cannot master the songspells, how long can she even stay alive?

Beguiling and lyrical, dangerous and romantic, Chantress will capture readers in a spell they won’t want to break.

Blog Tour! Review: Entice by Jessica Shirvington

Title: Entice
Author: Jessica Shirvington
Series: The Violet Eden Chapters #2
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Find it Here: Amazon, Goodreads
Source: ARC provided by publisher for blog tour

Violet Eden is Grigori - part angel, part human. Her destiny is to protect humans from the vengence of exiled angels.
Knowing who to trust is key but, when Grigori reinforcements arrive, it becomes clear everyone is hiding something. Even Lincoln. The only thing Violet does know: Phoenix's hold over her is more dangerous than ever.
The race to find the one thing that could tilt the balance of power brings them all to the sacred mountains of Jordan, where Violet's power will be pushed to the extreme. And the ultimate betrayal exposed.

My thoughts:

I love this series so much! I've come to the conclusion that one of my favorite types of characters to read within the young adult paranormal genre is angels! I feel like they're so exciting and each story can be so different!

Jessica Shirvington's angels in the Violet Eden Chapters are a group called Grigori and they're purpose is to protect the earth and humans from the dark fallen angels.  Each member of the Grigori has an "angel maker" and depending on how powerful and what type of angel decided to be their "maker", the Grigori member has certain powers.  I've explained it really badly but if you read the books, it's all really fascinating!

Violet, as we know from Embrace, decided to embrace her inner Grigori and now she is working with her partner Lincoln and taking out the bad angels.  But of course, we know that she is head over heels in love with Lincoln but it's strictly forbidden for them to ever be together which really sucks because he is one of my favorite guy characters! While reading Embrace, I was really torn between Lincoln and Phoenix because they both seem like really great guys! But after reading Entice, I was shocked at the level of cruelty Phoenix stooped to to be able to get what he wanted.  I really hope in the next book we see more Phoenix because I really think that he still has feelings for Violet.

I definitely recommend Embrace to anyone who hasn't read it yet and really likes angel books! I was captivated from the first few chapters and I just flew through Entice! I give Entice 4 hearts for being a very exciting adventure with twists and turns that I was not expecting!

Review: The Crown of Embers

Title: The Crown of Embers
Author: Rae Carson
Series: Fire and Thorns #2
Publisher: GreenWillow
Realease Date: September 18, 2012
Find it here: Amazon, Goodreads
Source: ARC, ALA

In the sequel to the acclaimed The Girl of Fire and Thorns, a seventeen-year-old princess turned war queen faces sorcery, adventure, untold power, and romance as she fulfills her epic destiny.

Elisa is the hero of her country. She led her people to victory against a terrifying enemy, and now she is their queen. But she is only seventeen years old. Her rivals may have simply retreated, choosing stealth over battle. And no one within her court trusts her-except Hector, the commander of the royal guard, and her companions. As the country begins to crumble beneath her and her enemies emerge from the shadows, Elisa will take another journey. With a one-eyed warrior, a loyal friend, an enemy defector, and the man she is falling in love with, Elisa crosses the ocean in search of the perilous, uncharted, and mythical source of the Godstone's power. That is not all she finds. A breathtaking, romantic, and dangerous second volume in the Fire and Thorns trilogy.

My thoughts:

I have been itching to write this review since the day I finished The Crown of Embers! After reading the last page I literally wanted to fan myself with the book because I’m pretty sure that ending gave me a heart attack! When I first started reading The Crown of Embers I was worried that it wasn’t going to live up to The Girl of Fire and Thorns because it is one of the most epic fantasy books I’ve ever read! If you’re having these same hesitations then don’t!! The Crown of Embers is a great sequel and you won’t be disappointed!

Elisa is still this really great heroine that we met in The Girl of Fire and Thorns! Even though she is now considered more beautiful and shapely than before, she doesn’t allow it to go to her head. She still carries all the great qualities that makes me want to cheer for her! I was really hoping to see her be this great queen that her sister knows she can be but then as I thought about it, a foreigner isn’t going to be so easily accepted as ruler of Joya d’Arena. She has to work for it which is what Elisa does best! When it comes to Elisa’s sister, Elisa is a stronger woman than I! The whole situation (no spoilers) shows Elisa’s strength of character and the fact that she puts the kingdom’s need before her own.

The romance! OH the Romance!!!! Talk about a slow, slow burn! Sometime I was yelling at the book, sometime I was squeeing with excitement, at one point I was almost crying and then again I had to fan myself with the book! I love that I was able to experience all these emotions while reading The Crown of Embers! Hector is one hunk of a royal guard and Elisa’s deserves a man who is loyal and kind-hearted like him!

The world building was just as fantastic in The Crown of Embers as it was The Girl of Fire and Thorns. Elisa experiences a whole new area of her country while she is on her journey. The ending of that whole situation had me shocked and saying “WTF!!” Needless to say, I will be in agonizing anticipation for the release of The Bitter Kingdom! I give The Crown of Embers 5 hearts for being a heart pounding adventure romance, pretty much part of the best fantasy trilogy I’ve ever read!

Review: Girl of Nightmares

Title: Girl of Nightmares
Author: Kendare Blake
Series: Sequel to Anna Dressed in Blood
Publisher: Tor Teen
Find it here: Amazon, Goodreads
Source: ARC, ALA

It's been months since the ghost of Anna Korlov opened a door to Hell in her basement and disappeared into it, but ghost-hunter Cas Lowood can't move on.

His friends remind him that Anna sacrificed herself so that Cas could live—not walk around half dead. He knows they're right, but in Cas's eyes, no living girl he meets can compare to the dead girl he fell in love with.

Now he's seeing Anna everywhere: sometimes when he's asleep and sometimes in waking nightmares. But something is very wrong...these aren't just daydreams. Anna seems tortured, torn apart in new and ever more gruesome ways every time she appears.

Cas doesn't know what happened to Anna when she disappeared into Hell, but he knows she doesn't deserve whatever is happening to her now. Anna saved Cas more than once, and it's time for him to return the favor.

My thoughts:

Anna Dressed in Blood is one of my favorite young adult horror novels because Kendare Blake does not hold back when it comes to blood and gore! I didn’t expect anything less when I picked up Girl of Nightmares and I’m so glad! All my favorite aspects from Anna Dressed in Blood were alive and thriving in Girl of Nightmares which made for a really exciting read!

One of the reasons why Anna Dressed in Blood and Girl of Nightmares are so amazing is because of the three main characters! They really came together in the former and continued to rely on each other in the latter. The dynamics of Cas, Thomas, and Carmel really works well and they play off of each other’s strengths which always makes for an exciting read! Thomas’ grandfather is one of my favorite characters! He made me laugh a lot! I really wanted to know more about the Obehman. Was he human before he became this monster? Was he a ghost who became super powerful? Is he a demon? I would have liked his origins explored more.

Going into Girl of Nightmares, all I really knew is that Cas was going to try to save Anna from wherever she was. Cas didn’t even know where Anna was! So I didn’t know where this book was going to take the readers but that almost made it more exciting because I had no idea! I really liked that the adventure took the gang outside of their little town into London and then into the Suicide Forest! The secret society of ghost hunters was also very interesting and I would love to see a side book that dives deeper into the history of it!

I really, really liked this book and I’m so glad that Kendare Blake has decided to write horror within YA! I give Girl of Nightmares 4 hearts because even though I loved it, it wasn’t as enthralling or all-consuming as Anna Dressed in Blood!
